Getting clean - Day one

So spring has arrived. It was 80 degrees today, and the perfect day to start my three day juice and food cleanse program from Green & Tonic in Darien.
I'm both a health nut and a junk foodie. If it's possible to be both, I am. One day you'll find me eating Kashi and veggies all day, another I'll be munching on chicken strips and cupcakes. I have a life where I often go out to eat and I'm constantly travelling between my home base in Conn., my family's place on Long Island and Tom's house outside of Philadelphia. So I often have to eat on the go. My life can get hectic and sometimes I just need to slow it down and recharge. And that where cleansing and detoxing my life comes in.
Green & Tonic has different programs; some are all juice and some are food,. There's a variety to choose from, which I like. The store is cute and bright; its located conveniently on the Post Road, ironicially next to Chunky Pam's Sweet Shop. But that's my life. As long as I don't pop over there and get some jelly beans and rock candy...
I got a cute tote and filled it with the requirements for the day. A spicy detox tea and muffin-like jumpstart bar began the day. A green juice followed midmorning, featuring celery, kale, spinach, cucumber and apple. The forbidden rice salad was for lunch - it included black rice, edamame, celebry and scalions tossed in sesasme oil. It was delicious! I can't believe how much it filled me up until dinner. I had a quick quencher juice int he afternoon, which was surprisingy delicious and sweet without added sugar - kind of like a fruit punch. It was the 'Daily Detox' juice - pear, orange, pineapple, ginger and aloe vera. Dinner was another green juice - the 'Green Monster' - which is the most popular green juice at the store. It has romaine, celery, spinach, kale, cucumber, ginger, parsley, lemon, apple and spirulina. It tastes super healthy and refreshing. I ate this with the butternut squash and apple soup. So good. Later I enjoyed a cashew nut shake, made with cashews, cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, black peppercorns, ginger and raw agave nectar. Real, fresh food just tastes better.
I'm liking this cleanse so far, and I don't even feel hungry, which is amazing. I've done juice cleanses in the past but they were too harsh and left me weak. No so with this one. I'll give a more thorough update tomorrow; I'm picking up the next two days and I'll be able to see some more benefits by then. I plan on choosing different juices, soups and salads so I can try them all. Then, when I'm in town I can pick up some of my favorites for lunch.

Peplum Love

A new trend that I absolutely need to get into asap? Peplums! These 80's throwbacks are hot right now, and I'm in love. I just think they're so funky and stylish. I actually wore one for Halloween, when I stuffed myself into a horrible, shiny 80s bridesmaid dress, but that was ironic, not stylish. At all. Check out some celebs who have rocked the trend I'm gonna be rocking SO SOON:

The reason I like this trend so much is 1. It's so 80's; 2. If you wear it high enough, it can camouflage a stomach trouble zone; and 3. You can actually make one yourself. Simply pair a flouncy top with a pencil skirt and cinch it with a skinny belt and you essentially have the same look. Love it.

Mini spa night

I was able to have the pleasure of going to a spa last month. I went over to East Wind and had a facial with my cousin. What a great experience.

Its so nice to just sit back and be pampered. The only thing I ever really do for myself is go to the gym regularly and get my nails done. So I was looking forward to this.

We started in the sauna, wearing plush robes and flip flops. We waited in the tranquil room with couches and a water fountain, and then were led to our treatment rooms. My facial was for sensitive skin, which I have. I didn't want to leave.

But I had to. And I don't exactly have the money to go back anytime soon, so how can I get that nice relaxed feeling more often??

An at-home spa experience. I'm a very typical type-A person. I'm super uptight and always wound like a knot. It's hard for me to relax. So anything that can get me feeling calm and content is a good thing. (Really, we should be able to gets massages and facials with our health insurance.) So I decided to do a mini day of beauty at home.

Started in the shower, where I didn't have to rush because I need to get to work, like most typical mornings. I use moisturizing shampoos and conditioners to get my hair soft. Wrapped it up and put on a robe. Then I did my face - I like Ole Henriksen's 3 step microdermabrasion system. It's a scrub, peel and moisturizing mask. It makes my skin baby smooth. Then I covered myself with a sunless tanner/moisturizer so I can stay glowy. I miss being tan in the winter.

Went to my room where I lit some candles, laid down on my bed, propped my feet up and put some cucumbers on my eyes. I put on some mindless tv - usually a girly show focused on how the rich and famous live like the Kardashians or Real Housewives. I'm absolutely addicted to these shows. And I just relaxed (with my cat!). It was nice to do nothing for a little while, and not feel bad about it.

Other products I've used for my self spa sessions are various scrubs, lotions and masks, ice packs for the eyes, dry brushing, hair treatments and foot massager instruments. They all work well. I think it's important to put yourself first and take care of your body and mind. I let my stressful job and life wear me out sometimes but if I don't take care of myself, no one will. So treat yourself and have a mini spa day of your own. I'm in the process of planning one with my friends when it's warmer and we can all enjoy it together.
